The $70 Shampoo.

I took Owen for his allergy test on Wednesday and wouldn't you know it, his skin is in such poor condition the doctor didn't want to do any testing on it.  So he looked him over and sent us home with a handful of prescriptions, a page full of directions and a follow up appointment to come back in one month to do the testing then.  The allergist is giving Owen a hardcore 1 month treatment to hopefully knock this all out of his system.  I'm missing that beautiful baby soft skin that we should be snuggling on right now!   Aw, my sweet angel.

So off we went to our Pharmacy for the 500th time this year- seriously at this rate we will be making our deductible by June.  Well after a little gasp and an "Oh Boy"from Larry the Pharmacist, he gave me a slight heads up that Owen's shampoo was pretty expensive.  By that comment I was guessing it was at least $25- maybe as high as $40.  Never in a million years would I expect $70.90!  And that was with insurance.  If we weren't insured this would have cost us $287.  For shampoo!!  CRAZY.  All of this stuff better work. Total pharmacy bill= $89.70.

Oh, and did I mention that we also need to give Owen a bath twice a day so we can butter him up with his steroid lotion at every bath.  Use his shampoo 3x a week and then give him an oral steroid for the next 20 days.  It is going to be a long 30 days.  But we will get through it.

It is just too bad it costs so much for a baby to feel better.  But you know what, I would go to the moon and back for him if it meant healing.

Whenever I begin to feel overwhelmed I try to remind myself that things could be so much worse.  Through it all he is so happy.  Itchy and scaly- but happy.

Day by day.

My baby just can't catch a break.

The poor little guy.  Thank goodness he is the happiest little kid, because for some this crap could really get you down in the dumps!  Over a month ago Owen had a virus and broke out in a tiny bumpy little rash.  It wasn't too big of a deal, but what the rash did was.  It gave him a full on excema flare up.  He had big dry, itchy patches of it all over his body. I did everything I could to get ride of it.  We tried the prescribed steroid cream, which helped for a while but the itchy excema would come right back. I would try the cream again and again it would work for a few days and then come right back.  I couldn't keep using the steroids on his little 15 month old body so lotion and lots of it was our next course of action.

Everyone in this house has sensitive skin so nothing but Cetephil for lotions and body washes and for laundry detergents it was free and clear all the way.  No pretty lavenders or fresh mountian air in our house...  It couldn't possibly be topical- but then again who knows.

Owen was happy, just super duper dry and itchy.

And then yesterday came.  I got him out of his crib to start the day, lay him down to change his diaper and Holy Moly! My boy was covered in bright red spots!  It looked like measles, but of course I knew it wasn't that.  It looked similar to when he had an allergic reaction to the flu shot, only this time the bumps were raised.  They were very itchy and you could tell he was just uncomfortable.  They were mostly on his belly and moving up his chest.  By the afternoon his entire truck was covered and they were moving around to his back.  By this morning his whole head, face, neck, belly, back and arms are covered in these itchy, raised red bumps.

Back to the doctors office we go.  Yes, they ALL know us by name now.  This is getting ridiculous.

Dr. Drazdik believes that he has a food allergy.  This was something I suspected but really, really hoped wasn't the case.  But add in him being affected by the flu shot.  Then the case of excema flare up that wouldn't go away and now this head to toe rash. The location of the rash indicates that it is most likely something he ate, not topical.  So guess what.  Owen is now off milk (and dairy), eggs, peanuts and strawberries until he visits an allergist.  The poor little guy needs to get an allergy test done.  I am so sad.  I know how uncomfortable those can be.

He also has a yeast infection, and is teething.  All in all he isn't a happy camper.

So much has been happening to my little boy in his short life already!  Thank you Lord that none of it has been life threatening, or all that serious.  But it still puts stress on his body and on his worrisome parents.

So now I ask all of you out there that deal with these particular allergies, any suggestions for alternative food products (so far he has taken to Soy Milk in place of the Whole Cows Milk).  Places for good, and yummy recipes, etc?  This will be a whole new way of me cooking for him so any advice will be helpful!  What are some good dairy free  substitutions that still taste good?  He LOVES his yogurt, I feel so bad that he can't have it anymore.  Or are there soy or dairy free ones?  Blah.  None of this is for sure until his allergy test, but I figure it won't hurt for me to start looking around.

Cutest. Patient. EVER.

Last Thursday Owen went in to have surgery on his left tear duct to finally get the goop all cleared up.  The poor little guy was born with both tear ducts completely blocked.  After a sinus infection around 7 months the right side cleared up on its own, but this left side has remained pesky.  At his 1 year doctor's appointment they strongly suggested we have it taken care of.  She said that they don't like them to persist after one year of age because it can lead to further issues down the road.  Boo.  The thought of my little baby being put under was a scary one.  But we braved it together and now he is goop free!  Yay!

The surgery itself was crazy fast.  When they were taking him away from me for surgery, the nurse told me to go have a cup of coffee.  By the time I was done, he would be too.  And she was right!  Wow!  They warned me ahead of time that children, especially babies when they come out of anesthesia, they will cry and be pretty hysterical. It is normal and not to worry.  They will calm down as it wears off.  Sure enough when they called me back to see him after surgery a nurse was holding him and he was crying like I never heard him before.  They handed him over to me and I thought to myself- Oh my goodness, what did I do to my baby.  His eye was completely swollen shut.  It looked as though he was hit in the eye with a baseball.  I did NOT expect to see that, and the tears came to my eyes.  But I knew that wouldn't help anything and pulled myself together.  I had a baby that needed me.  So I just held him tight, rocking and singing Jesus Loves Me, You are My Sunshine and Trust in the Lord over and over again in between kisses, just so he knew he wasn't alone.

After a bit, when I noticed he was starting to settle down a bit and I was able to start seeing his eye through the puffiness I remembered I brought my laptop along.  The nurses said it was OK, so I put on his beloved Elmo and all was alright with the world.  He started to giggle more then cry, and his thrashes turned into snuggles.  We were able to get him to nibble on a few graham crackers and he had a few sips of juice.  Pretty soon the nurse told me that I could get him dressed that he was ready to go home.  I was shocked.  The entire thing took less then 2 hours!  The doctor assured me that his swelling would go down and that he would look and act more himself by later in the day if not by tomorrow.  I was a little doubtful, but OK.

Sure enough, by evening the swelling was almost all gone and we had to stop him from wrestling with Jackson.  The following day there was zero swelling, only the under of his eye was a bit red.  It looked as though he may have bumped it on something while playing.  By Saturday, only 2 days after surgery he looked 100% like himself.  No swelling, no redness, no nothing.  Just a runny nose and a cough from all the drainage of fluids they had to pump into his eye and nasal cavity to clear out the blockages.  Amazing.  I am so, so, so happy it went as well as it did.  I seriously had my doubts, especially after seeing him immediately after surgery.  But he is a tough little guy and came right through with no problems.  Thank you Lord.

I just love that cute little diaper butt hanging out the back of the gown :)

Oh how afraid I was.  I felt so helpless and scared that something terrible was going to happen to my baby.  So I decided to hand it over to God and to trust in Him to hold my baby when I couldn't.  I asked all the Prayer Warriors I knew of to keep Owen lifted up (and for a brave mommy too.)  Thank you to everyone who prayed with us that day and the days leading up to his surgery.  I truly felt your comforting prayers! As scared as I was, I knew God was in control.  Oh how Great He Is!

This is the song that played in the car on the way to the hospital. No way was this an accident.

31 Week Doctor's Appointment

Last Tuesday my mom and Jackson went along with me to my doctor's appointment.  I wanted my mom to be able to share in hearing Owen's heartbeat.  It was so neat seeing my mom's face when the nurse put the doppler on my tummy.  That is one of the coolest, most special ways of connecting to an unborn baby.  I never tire of hearing it!

The appointment went wonderful.  Owen's heartbeat was loud and strong at 145.  I am still measuring one week ahead on my fundal height. But Dr. O'Neill was fine with that.  Looks like that is just how we roll over here.  And to be honest, if I end up delivering one week ahead of schedule I will be perfectly fine with that!

We are now headed to the finish line.  I go back for my next appointment in two weeks!  Two weeks after that, I go for one more appointment and then I begin going in once a week!!!  How has this moved so fast? I can hardly believe it.  But goodness am I ready.  Not that this pregnancy has been bad or anything.  I still love being pregnant.  (Sciatica and everything...) But I am ready to move into the next stage of our life.  I am excited about becoming a family of four.  I look forward to nursing again, to that wonderful new-baby smell in our house.  I am excited about watching Jackson grow into brotherhood, and see him mature as a little person.  Sure there will be some difficult times ahead.  But my support system is stronger then ever.   And I can do this.  We can do it.

Life is awesome and I can't wait to add even more beauty into it.

27 Week Doctor Appointment

Daddy and Jackson on top of the "Dinosaur Egg" in our neighborhood.  I love the way they are looking and laughing with each other- so sweet!  Goodness I love these two men!

This morning Jackson and I headed out to my 27 week Doctor's visit.  Everything went really well.  The nurse found Owen's heartbeat right away, it was super strong, loud, and steady at 154.  Jackson loves hearing this (as do I!) Dr. O'Neill is now measuring my tummy- from right at the top of the bump to right below, near my pelvic bone.  This is called the "Fundal Height", and it is done to insure that the baby is growing as it should; am I going to have big baby, were we off on his due date, could he be breech, etc.  27 Weeks should equal 27 cm.  Last month I was measuring 2 weeks ahead and today I am measuring 1 week ahead.  Not a big difference, but something to keep an eye on.  I measured two weeks ahead with Jackson almost the entire pregnancy until the last month and then he slowed done and everything caught up with itself.  If we are still measuring ahead I might get another ultrasound just as a precautionary. But I don't mind!  Any excuse to see Littlest Man is OK with me!  Also, I passed my Sugar Test so I have no need to worry about Gestational Diabetes.  That is great news!

And guess what... in three days I will be in my Third Trimester!!  Holy moly!  Where did the time go?  I feel like I was pregnant with Jackson for an eternity- it had have been at least 3 years.  But this one, it is flying right by me!  But I can definitely feel like the end is nearing.  Owen is kicking like a full blown soccer player.  I can see my belly move with each kick and now I can start to tell if it is a foot or a hand (or both at the same time!) that is giving me a shake.  I can feel if he turns over or flips around- let me tell you, this is a strange sensation!  I forgot what this felt like with Jackson.

Also, the other night I had my first experience with Braxton Hicks, which is the body's way of preparing me for labor.  They are called "fake contractions" and are totally normal beginning at this point i the pregnancy.  But they sure don't feel fake, that's for sure!  They only lasted about a half an hour, but it was a surprising, new feeling for me.  The other weird, and totally NOT fun thing I have been getting lately (and in the middle of the night of all times!) are Charlie Horses!  Last night I had a really bad one that woke me from a sound sleep yelling out and instant tears.  I brought them up to Dr. O'Neill, and she said these are also normal in pregnancy.  Just means I need to eat more bananas!  It is my bodies way of telling me I am low in potassium.  Well, at least I learned something that can help, because I know that neither me nor Scott are enjoying being awoken to tears and pain!

But honestly aside from these little aches and pains here and there I have been feeling GREAT!  I loved being pregnant with Jackson and now that the nausea is gone, I am loving being pregnant this time too.  I have noticed that the "nesting" in me is starting to surface.  Yesterday afternoon I completely rearranged my kitchen countertops to make for more work surface and get rid of excess clutter.  As I was doing it I knew it was the "nesting" starting to show its face.  But oh well- they look fantastic!  Haha.  This weekend Scott is taking a few days off of work so we can get all of our bedrooms moved, painted and redecorated.  It is going to be a lot of work, but they are going to look great-  I am so excited!  I am hoping this weekend will help with my nesting cravings!  Well off to a busy, fun-filled weekend and expect pictures to follow soon.

23 week Doctor's Appointment

I had my monthly Owen check up today, so I brought my favorite big Brother along with me so he could hear his little brother's heartbeat again.  Oh how excited he got when he heard it!  He immediately jumped right off of his chair and came next to me on the doctor's table with a huge grin across his face.  It was awesome.  I love that I can bring Jackson to these appointments.  It really connects him to his little brother in a whole new way.  Plus he is such a good boy!  He sits so nice, eating his animal crackers and never interrupts the nurses or the doctor when they are talking.  He is even answering them now when they talk to him (our sweet shy boy!)  He loves looking at the bulletin boards they have in the hallways full of pictures of the babies delivered by their doctor's; always asking if Owen will be there when he is born.  He did tell me today though that he doesn't want to ever have to go pee-pee in a cup.  "Mommy, I really don't want to!"  Made me smile. Oh the things that bother them....

Owen's heartbeat was fast and strong at 147, right where it has been pretty much throughout the pregnancy.  This was so cool- as soon as the nurse found Owen's heartbeat he must not have liked the pressure she was putting on him with the doppler so he pushed right back.  She could feel him moving and pushing her hand away the whole time.  Baby Owen is getting so strong!  With each of her pushes he was doing two right back at her, you could just imagine him saying "Hey!  Cut that out already!"

We got the results to all of my tests, and everything is perfect and normal, so that is a relief.  I go back in about two weeks for my glucose intolerance test where I get to drink that flat orange pop again. I am not worried, I didn't have any issues with gestational diabetes with Jackson, so I will probably be fine again this time.  But we shall see.  Fingers crossed.  Other then that, pretty quick appointment.  I go back in 4 weeks on August 19th for our next one.

Goodness, this pregnancy is moving so fast.  I can hardly believe it.  Next week is an important milestone for Owen.  If something were to happen and I were go into labor, he would be able to survive outside of the womb!  It is always somewhat of a relief hitting this point in pregnancy.

Littlest Man is now about as long as an ear of corn *grin*

Our 3rd Doctor's Appointment

We had our 15 week doctor's appointment today and FINALLY got to hear the babies heartbeat! It was like music to my ears. The little one was at 145 today and when they saw it on my early ultrasound it was at 144.... could this be another boy?! We shall see! I got the go ahead to make my ultrasound appointment to find out the sex- SO EXCITED!!! I think one of the neatest things about today was the validation I got. For the past 2 weeks I have been feeling the baby move, the first week just twice, last week twice and this week every day. Well when i was laying down on the table for the nurse to use the doppler I thought i felt the baby on my lower left side. When the nurse was checking around she was looking on the middle/center right and not finding anything. I just thought to myself how i just felt it on the way lower left, so I told her to check much lower so she moved the doppler there and found the heartbeat right away!! So I haven't just had a lot of gas :) I really am feeling the little one.

Dr. O'Neill came in then and she gave us the OK to get our BIG ULTRASOUND!  We get to make our appointment within the next 2-3 weeks!!!  Oh man, I am so excited.  I can't wait to find out already.

How your baby's growing:

Your growing baby now measures about 4 inches long, crown to rump, and weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces (about the size of an apple). She's busy moving amniotic fluid through her nose and upper respiratory tract, which helps the primitive air sacs in her lungs begin to develop. Her legs are growing longer than her arms now, and she can move all of her joints and limbs. Although her eyelids are still fused shut, she can sense light. If you shine a flashlight at your tummy, for instance, she's likely to move away from the beam. There's not much for your baby to taste at this point, but she is forming taste buds. Finally, if you have an ultrasound this week, you may be able to find out whether your baby's a boy or a girl! (Don't be too disappointed if it remains a mystery, though. Nailing down your baby's sex depends on the clarity of the picture and on your baby's position. He or she may be modestly curled up or turned in such a way as to "hide the goods.")

Our 2nd Doctor's Appointment

11 weeks 2 days, on the beach of Kelley's Island

So I am now 11 1/2 weeks along and things feel so different then the last time with our angel baby. I am having extreme nausea, a ton of heartburn and already have developed quite a baby bump!  When they say you "show" sooner with your second children, they weren't joking!  I can't believe how absolutely pregnant I look.  There is no hiding it any longer!!

I had my second doctor's appointment today.  At first, the nurse wasn't able to locate the heartbeat. But she told me not to stress out just yet- the baby is so small and the womb is so large it most likely is moving around a whole lot. (Needless to say I was scared to DEATH!!!)  When my doctor came in she preformed an ultrasound and right away we saw the baby. The heartbeat was beating strong and steady, and the coolest part was that the little one actually looks like a baby now. We could see it's nose and mouth and its fat little belly. It was so cool!

I go to my next appointment on the 28th of this month, and at this appointment my doctor will give me the go ahead to make the magic appointment- the one where we get to find out the sex! Yay, we are so excited!! We will be able to schedule it around the middle of June.

----------------
How your baby's growing: 11 weeks

Your baby, just over 1 1/2 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden.

She's already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional. You won't feel your baby's acrobatics for another month or two — nor will you notice the hiccupping that may be happening now that her diaphragm is forming.

Our 1st Doctor's Appointment

Yay!!! I had my first appointment this morning. Oh my goodness, I have been on pins and needles waiting for it! Well, the exam went wonderfully, everything looked great. But because of my resent history of loss, she sent me down for an early ultrasound to check for viability and to make sure we were on target for dating since my periods have been so irregular. Immediately the ultrasound tech found the little baby and it had a wonderful, strong heartbeat of 144 (it should be anywhere between 120-175, so we are right in the middle). I instantly started crying, I was just so, so happy. I will never forget that feeling!  I feel such a lightness in my heart. God is so good! Now my chance of a m/c went from 50/50 chance to a 3% chance. I'll take those odds!  Awesome. I am so happy!!!!!

Oh, and our due date changed slightly. She has me as November 16th- 3 days later! We shall see :)

It looks more like a smudge then a baby at this point- but it's there!!

-----------------------------
How baby is growing.... 7 weeks

The big news this week: Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs — although they look more like paddles at this point than the tiny, pudgy extremities you're daydreaming about holding and tickling. Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of her tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks, but that's the only thing getting smaller. Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry.

If you could see inside your womb, you'd spot eyelid folds partially covering her peepers, which already have some color, as well as the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin. Both hemispheres of your baby's brain are growing, and her liver is churning out red blood cells until her bone marrow forms and takes over this role. She also has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the hormone insulin to aid in digestion. A loop in your baby's growing intestines is bulging into her umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from her tiny body.

Jackson's 9 month Doctor's Appointment

On Thursday, December 6th I took Jackson to see Dr. Biglow (formally Dr. Wagner- she got married) for his 9 month doctor's appointment. It went really well. He is still a peanut weight wise, weighing in at 16lbs 2oz. His height is 27inches and his head is 17 inches- all right on for his stature. His doctor was very impressed that he is cruising furniture and even taking 1-2 steps unassisted every now and then at 9 months. Also that he is saying "Mom" and "Dad" and knowing who to call what at this point. His milestones are a bit ahead of the game so we are on the right track for sure. She couldn't get over how much he has changed, looks-wise since when he was born. She even commented on how much he looks likes his cousins- Anna especially. But we have been hearing that from eveyone lately! There is no denying they are related, that is for sure!

I decided to have Jackson get a flu shot at this appoitment. Dr. Biglow said that the AAP recommends it for all children 6 months of age and up, but it was up to me to decide if I wanted to. Jackson has such a tough time when he isn't feeling good, I couldn't imagine him suffering through the flu. Especially since now all the cold medicine has been pulled from the drug stores, there wouldn't be much to help make him feel any better. The shot really didn't effect him too much. He woke up more then usual in the middle of the night, but other then that he handled it well. We go back in a month for the second dose of the vaccine and also for a reweigh. We will see a different doctor at that appontment becasue Dr. Biglow will be on maternitiy leave. She is due in 15 days! How exciting for her. I am very curious as to how she will change as a doctor once she has a child of her own. She is extremly overly cautious about things, which I don't necessarily mind. Better to be that way then to blow things off when it could turn out to be serious. But I wonder if it will make her a little more relaxed about somethings- or at least a bit more realisitic once she is dealing with a baby every moment of her life. We shall see!

6th Month Doctor's Appointment

Yesterday I took Jackson to see Dr. Wagner for his 6 month appointment. He was such a good boy! Of course all the nurses went crazy for him and most of them remembered him. No one could get over how much he has changed in just 2 months! He is still a little peanut- he now weighs 14lbs 8oz and is 26" tall- so he gained exactly 2 lbs and got 2" taller since last visit. He got 4 immunizations this time around but thankfully only two shots. They were his Polio Vaccine, Pneumoccal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPV), Diphtheria Tetanus & Pertussis (DTaP) and the Hepatitis B Vaccine. He was so good when they did his shots, hardly cried at all! I was so proud of him. What a very brave boy.

For some reason I thought we wouldn't have to go back for more shots until he was a year. But that is not the case. We actually get to go back when he is 9 months for another set of vaccines. I look forward to these being done already!

I have added a new ticker to our homepage. It is counting down the days until the Outer Banks! We are so excited to be going on vacation- as of today, only 15 days to go! Yay! I better start packing- it is amazing how much stuff an infant needs!

On Sunday we get to babysit Sophie again. It is so much fun watching the babies together. I just know they are going to grow up to be the best of friends. The way they interact is so adorable. I know that watching Sophie, Jackson is learning so much. Plus he has to be able to fight back- she always steals his toy and crawls away. He needs to be able to go after her and get it back! He is trying so hard to learn how to crawl. It should really be any day now. And then watch out world!

Jackson's 4 month Doctor's Appointment

Today Scott and I took Jackson to see Dr. Wagner for his 4 month check up. It was a great appointment. Jackson now weighs 12lbs 8oz and is 24'' long, so he is growing wonderfully. He has been holding at the 25th percentile since he was born. Since he has been holding here she is very pleased with his progression.

I told Dr. Wagner about his runny nose and watery eyes that he has had for the past few days and how I felt it had to do with his teething. She agreed that it definately had to do with that and to not be concerned if he even got a low grade fever or diarrhea. All of these things are very common for teethers. Good to know my instinct was correct!

The only icky part of his Doctor's appointment was that Jackson had to recieve his next set of shots. Today he received the DTaP (Diphtheria Tetanus & Pertussis), Hib (Haemophilus Influenzae Type b), Pneumococcal Polysaccharide and the Polio Vaccine. He handled it really well actually. He cried of course, but after it was all done he smiled at us- what a brave little guy! It has been a few hours and I think his legs are sore (he got two shots in each thigh). But aside from wanting to cuddle a little more then usual he is doing pretty well. I just hope it turns out better this time then it did in his last round of vaccines where he got such a terrible cold. Well, we shall see...

2 Month Doctor's Appointment Today

Jackson went in to see Dr. Wagner today for his Two Month Appointment. This is a very important one because this is where he gets his first big set of immunizations. He received the Hepatitis B #2, Diphtheria, Tetanus, acellular Pertussis (DTaP) #1, and the H. influenza type b (Hib) #1. It is five total immunizations, but only 3 shots administered.

When we went into the doctor's office he was so happy, smiling and gurgling away. It made me feel even worse seeing how happy he was and knowing what awful things were in store for him. The check up went great. Dr. Wagner is very happy with Jackson's growth, and even she couldn't get over how much older he looks now. He is getting to be such a big boy! He weighed in today at 10lbs 1oz, and 22 inches long. After the check up, Dr. Wagner left and two nurses came in to administer the shots (the Dr. doesn't want the children to be afraid of her). This part was the worst. Each nurse gave him a shot in each thigh and I had to stand over him in the middle to help him feel secure. As soon as they gave the shots he screamed so hard, turned purple and then held his breath in pain. The nurses kept saying to him "OK, time to breath little guy, time to breath". After they were done he was crying so hard. It broke my heart to see him in such shock and pain. I held him real close and nursed him right away and he calmed down pretty quickly.

Now the icky part about this day is not only did he get his shots, but by getting them they lowered his immune system a bit- enough to get the head cold I was fighting. So he now had a double whammy to get over! Now he is so congested and has a little cough. I feel so bad for him. He is just miserable. I have to use the aspirator on him (which he hates) to relieve the congestion. But with that and the vaporizer it seems to be helping a bit.

Our poor little man! He is just one unhappy little boy today.
